Don't Hide: How One Founder's Story is Changing the Mental Health Conversation
How One Founder's Story is Changing the Mental Health Conversation
When Sam, founder of story-sharing platform Don’t Hide, turned 39, the decision was made to transform over 20 years of personal struggles with depression, anxiety, and relationships into something that could help others. Following pivotal moments of questioning whether to keep going, the foundation for Don’t Hide was established.
Don’t Hide is a website and story-sharing platform for anyone over the age of 18 to share experiences and read the stories of others. It serves as a dedicated space for real people to discuss mental health, life challenges, recovery, growth, and coping strategies.
At the heart of the project is a straightforward message: nobody is alone.
Untangling the Mind
The initial concept stemmed from a personal low point around three years ago, marked by feelings of being lost and uncertain of where to turn.
Grabbing a laptop and typing out thoughts without a plan or an audience provided a critical outlet. Getting those thoughts out of the mind and onto the screen began a process of untangling complex emotions, a process credited with helping to save a life.
This raised a broader question: if writing provided such significant relief, could encouraging others to tell their stories help them too? More importantly, could those published words reach someone else at exactly the right moment?
That core idea became the foundation of Don’t Hide.
Every Story Has a Number
Since launching in June, the response to Don’t Hide has been remarkable.
In just a few months, 55 stories have either been published or are currently in progress, with more in the pipeline. Individuals from diverse backgrounds, ages, and walks of life have trusted the platform with personal experiences.
Topics cover a wide spectrum, including anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, trauma, relationships, neurodiversity, physical health, and recovery. While some narratives are heartbreaking and others uplifting, every single one belongs to a real person.
Furthermore, every story is assigned its own unique number.
From the moment an individual decides to tell their story, that number is reserved exclusively for them and will never be reassigned. If someone starts writing but discovers they aren’t ready to finish, needing weeks, months, or longer, the number simply waits.
It becomes etched into the Don’t Hide history books. If the writer returns when ready, the story takes its place under its designated number. If left incomplete, the number remains unused.
As the archive grows, gaps may appear, but those gaps carry meaning: they represent individuals who took the initial step toward sharing their journey, even if they weren’t ready to tell the rest. No story takes precedence over another; every participant receives a number, and every number holds a story behind it.
Starting Conversations
The impact of Don’t Hide extends beyond the published articles.
Countless messages of support have poured in, with readers discussing the platform with friends, family, and colleagues. People are actively sharing resonate stories and starting vital conversations of their own.
It is impossible to know what someone is dealing with behind closed doors. Reading about another person’s experiences offers a crucial reminder that no one has to struggle in isolation. A story’s writer may never meet the reader or witness the direct impact of their words, which is precisely what makes the act of sharing so powerful.
Looking to the Future
The ultimate ambition behind Don’t Hide is ambitious: to help save lives.
For anyone navigating two decades of ups and downs, creating something that helps even one person feel less alone, encourages them to speak out, or helps them see that tomorrow can be different makes the effort worthwhile.
However, this is only the beginning.
The vision for Don’t Hide extends beyond a single website, aiming to build a broader online and in-person community where people can speak openly, share experiences, and offer mutual support.
The goal is to encourage more individual stories while inviting businesses, community organisations, and local groups to get involved. Over time, Don’t Hide aims to expand its reach far beyond its original origin.
Behind every statistic is a person, and behind every person is a story. Sometimes, someone simply needs to know that another person has been there too. Whatever the struggle, no one has to hide.
Share a Story
Don’t Hide welcomes real-life stories from anyone aged 18 or over. There is no requirement to be a professional writer, nor does a story need to be perfect, it simply needs to be authentic. Submit a story: donthide.co.uk/share
