Bringing Compassionate, Fear-Free Pet Care Directly to Your Doorstep

Starting a new business takes a leap of faith, especially when you are introducing a service that is completely unique to the local area. For Freyer Young, a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), that leap was driven by a simple but powerful mission: to make essential veterinary care accessible, stress-free, and comfortable for pets and their owners alike.

We sat down with Freyer to chat about her business, Freyer Home RVN, what inspired her to take the road less travelled, and how she is helping Oswestry’s beloved pets live their best, happiest lives.

Hi Freyer! To start off, could you tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?

My name is Freyer Young, and I’m a registered veterinary nurse and the face behind Freyer Home RVN. When I’m not working at a local veterinary practice, I travel around the Oswestry area providing professional nursing care to pets in the absolute comfort of their own homes.

What's the story behind Freyer Home RVN? What inspired you to start a mobile nursing service?

There isn’t a wildly dramatic story behind it, really! I simply wanted to set up a sideline that encompassed my love of veterinary nursing and my passion for providing a comfortable, compassionate, and fear-free experience for all pets.

Through my work in practice, I noticed that a lot of owners were struggling with anxious pets, transport, or just the general stress of getting to a clinic. I realised I could step in and fill that gap to make veterinary care as accessible as possible. Freyer Home RVN was born from that exact thought.

My grandparents were also a huge inspiration. Their beloved springer spaniel, Chilli, who is sadly no longer with us, needed occasional treatments at home like nail clipping and anal gland expression. Instead of my grandparents having to make the journey from Llanrhaeadr to their vet, I would go to them. It allowed Chilli to stay right there with her favourite people while still getting the vital care she needed.

How would you describe the experience you offer in three words?

Compassionate, friendly, and relaxed. My ultimate aim on every single visit is to become your pet’s new best friend and make them as happy as possible so they can receive the best care.

What is your absolute favourite part of running the business so far?

I absolutely adore the people. You never know who you’re going to meet and what wonderful stories they are going to share with you.

The joy of being home-based is that I can spend as much time as needed with a pet and their owner, without the strict time constraints we often face in a busy veterinary clinic. The scenery around here is always a massive plus, too, there is nothing quite like catching a sunset over the hills as you drive to your next job!

My role varies massively because of the local demographics, which I love. I might start my morning visiting an elderly couple and their older dog who struggles with mobility, listening to their lovely stories, and finish my rounds with a young family, hopefully inspiring the next generation of veterinary nurses and vets.

What has been your biggest challenge since launching?

Honestly? Finding the confidence to actually get started.

Because this venture is so new, and there truly isn’t anything else like it in the local area, I worried that people wouldn’t be interested, that I wasn’t experienced enough, or that people wouldn’t fully understand what a mobile vet nurse can offer.

I’ve been in the veterinary industry for eight years, and an RVN for three, but no matter how long you’ve been doing a job, imposter syndrome always has a way of wiggling in!

How did you overcome those doubts?

I had to learn not to let those thoughts hold me back. I realised I didn’t need to have every single detail completely figured out before setting off on the road. By taking small steps and sticking firmly to my core values of friendly, fear-free care, I knew I’d find my way.

Veterinary nursing can be incredibly tough, both physically and emotionally. I’ve seen cases that have broken my heart, but I’ve also seen cases that make me feel, deep down, that this is my absolute calling. Receiving positive feedback from clients means the world to me. All I want is for the pets of our community to access the care they need without fear or discomfort.

What does the future look like for Freyer Home RVN? Are there any exciting plans on the horizon?

I am still in the tentative beginning stages of the business, focusing on gradually building up a lovely client base. But looking ahead, clients can look forward to some exciting updates! I am currently working towards completing an Applied Animal Behaviour Diploma to become a qualified Animal Behaviour Technician. There may be some other new services on the way too… but that is strictly TBD for now!

Finally, do you have a seasonal pet tip for local owners?

Absolutely! Summer is the absolute height of tick season. Make sure to check your pets thoroughly whenever they have been running through long, thick grasses. Look out for any tiny brown dots that seem to be attached and growing.
