Empower your team: A practical guide to accessing staff training grants in Oswestry

Funding and Grants to Upskill Your Workforce

Investing in staff training is one of the most effective ways to drive business growth, but the cost of high-quality courses can often be a barrier for growing enterprises. Fortunately, several national and regional funding streams are actively operating to help businesses defer these costs.

Navigating the landscape of workforce upskilling grants requires knowing exactly what is open, who qualifies, and how to access the funds before committing to training providers.

The UK Growth and Skills Levy

The standard Apprenticeship Levy has evolved into a much more adaptable system designed to support smaller businesses that do not pay into the levy directly. This scheme is ideal for companies looking to bring in new talent or significantly upskill existing staff through structured qualifications.

Who is Eligible Any business with an annual pay bill of less than £3 million is classed as a non-levy payer and can access heavy government subsidies. To qualify for 100% funding, the employee being trained must be under the age of 25 at the start of the apprenticeship. For staff aged 25 and over, the government still covers 95% of the training costs, leaving the employer to pay only the remaining 5%.

How to Apply Businesses must set up an account on the government’s digital Apprenticeship Service portal. From there, employers can browse approved training providers and choose relevant frameworks. Smaller businesses can also use the portal to apply for a “Levy Transfer,” where large corporations donate up to 50% of their unspent levy funds to cover the total training costs of smaller companies in their region or supply chain.

Regional Skills Bootcamps

Skills Bootcamps are flexible, hands-on courses lasting up to 16 weeks. They are designed to help employers rapidly upgrade the capabilities of their current workforce in specific technical areas, helping to bridge severe skills gaps in sectors like digital marketing, cyber security, green tech, and advanced manufacturing.

Who is Eligible These bootcamps are open to businesses of all sizes looking to upskill existing staff, provided the training leads to a new role, increased responsibilities, or a salary progression within the company. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with fewer than 250 employees, the government subsidises 90% of the cost, meaning the business only contributes 10%. Large employers receive a 70% subsidy and must contribute the remaining 30%.

How to Apply Applications are managed through regional combined authorities and approved local colleges or commercial training providers. Businesses need to identify an active bootcamp in their territory, contact the specific training provider delivering the course, and register their employees directly through them before the cohort starts.

The Shropshire Skills Hub

Backed by localised regional development funding, the Shropshire Skills Hub is a targeted initiative specifically for businesses operating within the Shropshire Council local authority boundary. It focuses on helping local employers get their staff fully funded vocational licences, certificates, and professional qualifications.

Who is Eligible To access this stream, the business must have physical premises located within the Shropshire Council area, and the employees being trained must be economically active and resident in the county. The funding is specifically earmarked for accredited vocational qualifications that directly improve technical capabilities or address local operational skills gaps, such as advanced software utilisation, transport licensing, or trade certifications.

How to Apply The programme is coordinated via the Marches Growth Hub network. Business owners must complete an initial diagnostic assessment with a local business advisor to verify their location and company size. Once approved, the hub works directly with the business to map out the required training and connect them with the local education partners delivering the funded places.

Made Smarter Adoption Programme

For companies operating in the manufacturing, engineering, or makers space, the Made Smarter initiative offers targeted support to help transition traditional workforces into digital environments. This includes specialised leadership programmes and technical training to ensure staff can operate advanced machinery, automation systems, and data software.

Who is Eligible This programme is strictly for small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses (SMEs) that employ fewer than 250 people, have a turnover under £50 million, and are based within the West Midlands region. The business must be looking to introduce digital tools, automation, or advanced tech into their production processes.

How to Apply Employers must register their details through the main Made Smarter West Midlands digital portal. A dedicated digital transformation advisor will then conduct a free site assessment to build a digital roadmap for the business. Following this review, the advisor will guide the company through the formal application process for match-funded technology grants and fully funded digital leadership training slots.

Essential Funding Rule:
For all the grants and subsidies mentioned above, funding cannot be secured retrospectively. Businesses must have their applications fully approved and agreements signed before any training begins, as retrospective costs will not be reimbursed.
