Funding Opportunity: Grants of Up to £5,000 to Promote Horticulture and Public Gardens
Grants of Up to £5,000 to Promote Horticulture and Public Gardens
Local community groups, heritage sites, and green space initiatives across the region have a valuable opportunity to secure funding for public gardening and botanical projects. The Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust provides grants of up to £5,000 to support initiatives that advance horticulture, restore public gardens, and encourage environmental conservation.
If you are managing a community garden, restoring a historic landscape, or looking to expand public access to green spaces, here is what you need to know about the scheme and how to apply.
What Is the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust?
Established in 1970, the Trust supports horticultural projects created for public benefit. Over the past five decades, it has awarded more than £3.2 million in funding to over a thousand recipients across the UK.
The main aim of the Trust is to promote botanical interest, protect natural environments through biodiversity, and make high-quality garden spaces accessible to the wider community.
What Projects Are Eligible?
The Trust funds a broad range of projects, provided horticulture and plant science form a core component of the work. Examples include:
Creation and Restoration: Building new public gardens or restoring historic garden spaces, parklands, and botanical features.
Public Access & Interpretation: Enhancing visitor facilities, plant labeling, signage, and accessibility to help the public connect with natural spaces.
Education & Training: Supporting horticultural education programmes, traineeship schemes, and workshops.
Research & Field Work: Funding botanical research, plant study field trips, and specialist publications.
Note: The Trust focuses strictly on horticultural projects. General infrastructure or building repair works are only supported if they are an integral part of a broader garden restoration scheme (such as restoring an historic conservatory or pergola within a public garden).
Grant Amounts and Key Deadlines
Maximum Grant: Up to £5,000 (typical awards range between £3,500 and £5,000, though smaller applications are also welcomed).
Application Deadlines: Applications are reviewed twice a year, with deadlines on 15 February and 15 August.
Decision Dates: Grants are awarded in April and September following each round.
Funding is generally provided for a single project phase, but multi-year support or follow-on grants may be considered for larger, ongoing developments.
Who Can Apply?
Applications are open to registered charities, community groups, educational institutions, and non-profit organisations that can demonstrate clear horticultural competence and a clear public benefit.
