New Energy in Shropshire: Oswestry Dark Morris Leads a Modern Border Revival

Oswestry Dark Morris Leads a Modern Border Revival

A vibrant new cultural initiative has officially launched in Oswestry, bringing high energy, modern flair, and community spirit to the ancient folk traditions of the Welsh border counties.

Oswestry Dark Morris performs in the distinctive Border Morris style, characterised by rhythmic stick-clashing, vibrant tatter jackets, dynamic movement, and driving acoustic soundscapes. The newly established group has quickly turned into a bustling community hub, boasting an exceptionally diverse age range and a membership that is 65% women.

A Modern Take on Local Tradition

Across the UK, Border Morris is experiencing a massive surge in popularity by breaking away from old stereotypes and fostering inclusive, welcoming spaces for all. Oswestry Dark Morris exemplifies this cultural renaissance, bringing together local people across multiple generations to prove that shared heritage and teamwork transcend age and background.

Beyond preserving local heritage, the group offers a unique combination of physical activity and social connection. Known for its wild energy and primal rhythms, Border Morris provides an exhilarating workout, an effective outlet for stress relief, and a fantastic screen-free social space.

“We’re a mixed-gender group and Morris brings people together through music, movement and friendship,” says founder Mike Lade. “It’s good exercise, helps develop coordination and supports mental wellbeing, and above all, it’s great fun, with plenty of laughter.”

Get Involved

Grounding itself in Shropshire’s rich regional heritage while maintaining an open-door policy, Oswestry Dark Morris is looking for new members to step forward and join its growing success story.

  • Dancers: Anyone aged 16 or over is welcome to join. No previous experience is needed as full training is provided.

  • Musicians: Anyone who plays an instrument is encouraged to get in touch to join the acoustic lineup.
