Funding Alert: Small Grants Available to Help Community and Horticultural Projects Grow

Small Grants Available to Help Community and Horticultural Projects Grow

Whether you are looking to restore a historic garden, develop a community green space, or kickstart a local horticultural research project, a brilliant funding opportunity has opened up that could provide the vital financial backing you need.

The Stanley Smith (UK) Horticultural Trust is currently accepting applications for its small grants scheme. Operating right across the UK, the trust focuses on supporting projects that advance horticulture for public benefit.

What is the funding for?

The trust provides grants to help get meaningful, plant-focused projects off the ground. Funding is typically awarded for:

  • The creation, development, or restoration of gardens and green spaces.

  • Horticultural research, conservation, and education.

  • Plant study trips and relevant publications.

Grants range from a few hundred pounds up to a maximum of £5,000, though standard awards usually sit comfortably between £3,000 and £4,000.

Who is eligible to apply?

The application process is remarkably open. Funding is available to:

  • Organisations and Trusts: Local community groups, charity gardens, and environmental organisations.

  • Individuals: Passionate individuals undertaking specific horticultural projects or studies can also apply directly.

How to apply

The application process is straightforward, requiring no rigid templates, just a clear breakdown of your ideas. To apply, you will need to pull together three electronic documents:

  1. An Application Summary Sheet: A quick overview featuring your contact details, organisation name (if applicable), project title, and a brief summary of the idea.

  2. A Project Description: This is your chance to tell your story. Include a brief background of your group, why the project is necessary, how you plan to deliver it, and how the space or project will be looked after in the long term. You can include drawings, site images, or planting lists to help bring your proposal to life. Don’t forget to include an itemised budget outlining exactly what the money will spend on.

  3. Financial Statement: If you are applying as an organisation, you must include a recently audited statement of accounts to demonstrate financial viability (this is not required for individual applicants).

Once your files are ready, digital applications can be emailed directly to the Trust Director at d.rae@rbge.org.uk.

If you have a project in mind that connects people with plants, improves public spaces, or protects our botanical heritage, this is the perfect time to get your application details finalised.
