The Finnis Scott Foundation Grant
If you run a local charity, community organisation, or educational trust working across horticulture, plant sciences, or historic fine art, funding from The Finnis Scott Foundation could help bring your next project to life.
Here is a straightforward guide to what the grant offers, what it can cover, who can apply, and how to submit an application.
What Is It?
The Finnis Scott Foundation is a UK grant-making charity set up to honor the memory of Sir David Montagu Douglas Scott and his wife, Valerie Finnis, a famed photographer and gardener.
The foundation provides capital and revenue grants to UK-registered charities and charitable organisations. Funding typically ranges up to £10,000, though due to high demand, most grants awarded are £5,000 or less. In exceptional cases, larger multi-year grants (up to £60,000) may be awarded when funds permit.
The trustees favour smaller charities where a grant will make a tangible, significant impact.
What Can the Grant Be Spent On?
The foundation focuses on two core areas:
1. Gardening, Horticulture, and Plant Sciences
Education and training: Sponsoring horticultural bursaries, traineeships, and apprenticeships.
Community and therapeutic gardens: Projects supporting gardens in hospices or community settings, with a strong focus on supporting disadvantaged groups.
Conservation: Preserving historic gardens, plant collections, or botanical research.
2. Fine Art and Art History
Pre-2000 artworks: Exhibition, study, and conservation of historical fine art created before the year 2000.
Gallery development: Assisting galleries with framing, picture restoration, and purchasing works of art.
Publications: Production of exhibition catalogues or academic art history research.
Key Exclusions
Art created after 2000, site-specific installations, or conceptual/performance art.
General salary costs (with the exception of structured horticultural traineeships or apprenticeships).
Expenditure already incurred (retrospective funding) or completed projects.
Direct applications from individuals (individuals must be sponsored by an eligible organisation).
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
To qualify for funding, your organisation must meet the following criteria:
Charitable Status: You must be a UK-registered charity, Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), or a registered charity linked to a hospice or special school (mainstream state schools are not eligible directly).
Established Track Record: The trustees prefer organisations that have produced at least one set of annual accounts and can demonstrate a proven track record of service delivery.
Sponsoring Institutions: Educational establishments and charities can apply on behalf of students or trainees for horticultural bursaries and apprenticeships.
How to Apply
Review the Guidelines: Read the full guidelines on The Finnis Scott Foundation Application Page to verify that your proposal aligns with their priorities.
