UKSPF Capital Grant Shropshire: How to Secure Funding for Your Business

Discover how to secure between £2,000 and £10,000 in match-funded growth capital for your business through the Shropshire Council UKSPF Capital Grant Scheme.

UKSPF Capital Grant Shropshire: How to Secure Funding for Your Business

Navigating small business funding can be a minefield of dead ends and outdated information, but if you are looking to scale your business, upgrade your premises, or invest in new machinery, there is a substantial funding pot available right now that you need to know about.

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) Capital Grant Scheme is actively offering local businesses a cash injection to help drive growth, improve productivity, and create sustainable jobs.

Here is a straightforward, jargon-free breakdown of what the grant is, who qualifies, and exactly how to secure it for your business.

What is the Grant?

This is a match-funded capital grant designed to spur business growth. Shropshire Council is offering between £2,000 and £10,000 to eligible businesses.

Because it is a match-funded scheme, the grant covers up to 50% of your total eligible project costs. For example, if you are purchasing a critical piece of machinery that costs £10,000, the scheme can provide £5,000, while your business injects the remaining £5,000.

Crucial Rule: Grants cannot be awarded retrospectively. You must not purchase any equipment or commit to any expenditure before your grant application is officially approved, or your funding will be void.

What Can the Funding Be Used For?

The scheme focuses strictly on capital expenditure. This means tangible investments that add long-term value to your operations, rather than day-to-day operational costs.

What is covered:

  • Capital Equipment: Purchasing new machinery, specialised production tools, or advanced hardware that directly increases your business capability.

  • Premises Improvements: Physical alterations or upgrades to your commercial business premises to improve efficiency or expand operations.

What is excluded:

To save you time on your application, the scheme specifically rules out certain expenses. You cannot use the grant for:

  • Standard IT equipment like standard laptops, office monitors, or computers (any electronics that fully depreciate within three years).

  • Software, unless it is hardcoded and entirely integral to running a specific piece of machinery purchased through the grant.

  • Like-for-like replacements of old or broken equipment.

  • Road vehicles, day-to-day running costs, or stock.

  • Second-hand items purchased from private individuals (second-hand equipment is only eligible if bought from a registered business).

Is Your Business Eligible?

The scheme is designed to back growing, commercially viable local enterprises. To qualify, your business must meet the following criteria:

  • Location: Your business must be physically located within the Shropshire Council local authority area.

  • Trading History: You must have a minimum trading history of at least 3 months.

  • Business Size: Small and medium-sized businesses with 1 to 49 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) employees are openly invited to apply. (Medium-sized businesses with 50 to 249 employees are eligible by invitation only).

  • Clear Outcomes: Your project must deliver at least one tangible outcome, such as creating new local jobs or introducing completely new products, services, or processes to your firm.

Note: While the separate “small equipment grant” window closed in mid-2025, the broader UKSPF Capital Grant framework continues to process core expressions of interest based on funding capacity.

How to Apply: The Preparation Checklist

Shropshire Council handles applications via a multi-stage process, starting with an Expression of Interest (EOI). Because demand is high, the application windows can open and close at short notice based on funding availability.

To ensure your application moves swiftly to the final approval stage, you will need to prepare a specific set of documentation:

1. Financial Records

  • For established businesses: Your last full set of accounts (covering at least 1 year) or your latest self-assessment return, alongside trading figures for the current year and forecasts for the next.

  • For newer businesses (under 12 months trading): A formal business plan, a breakdown of current financial performance, and a full 12-month profit and loss and cashflow forecast.

2. Formal Quotes

You must prove you are getting market value for your capital investment. The number of formal, independent quotes you need depends on the price tag of the equipment:

  • Items under £24,999: A minimum of 2 formal quotations supported by your clear technical specification.

  • Items between £25,000 and £200,000: A minimum of 3 formal quotations.

Take the Next Step

Funding rounds are highly competitive, and incomplete or ineligible applications are turned down automatically without exception. Taking the time to dial in your business plan, gather competitive quotes, and clearly map out how this funding will create jobs or introduce new services is the best way to protect your application.

Keep an eye directly on the Shropshire Council business support portal to monitor current open windows for Expression of Interest submissions, and ensure your financial paperwork is fully prepped to move when the window opens.
