A Legacy Born at Derwen

The blueprint for National Ablepreneurs Day did not begin in a modern corporate boardroom. It began nearly a century ago with a seven-year-old girl named Emily Kathleen Renshaw. After losing her leg following a devastating medical mistake, Emily faced a world entirely devoid of accessibility or understanding.

Yet, her trajectory changed when she became one of the very first three students welcomed into the newly founded Derwen Training College by Dame Agnes Hunt. At a time when disabled individuals were almost exclusively defined by society’s limitations, Derwen offered something revolutionary: purpose, skill, and the belief in potential. It was there that Emily learned to thrive, met her future husband, and built a life that proved disability does not dictate ambition.

The Modern Reality of the 'Ablepreneur'

Fast forward to the present day. Emily’s granddaughter, award-winning entrepreneur Helen Pugh, spent nearly three decades building a successful career within the property and professional services sectors. However, navigating her own journey with chronic illness and physical disabilities eventually made traditional, rigid employment unsustainable.

Faced with a system that often fails to accommodate change, Helen chose a different path. She founded Ablepreneurs®, a supportive community specifically designed for disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent entrepreneurs, freelancers, and creatives who are building businesses on their own terms.

“Talent doesn’t fade with disability or illness,” Helen explains. “It just needs the right environment to shine. Too many extraordinary founders build incredible businesses while remaining completely unseen because they don’t fit into a traditional mould.”

Launching National Ablepreneurs Day

What began as a personal mission to create an inclusive community has now grown into a major national milestone. On 16th September 2026, the inaugural National Ablepreneurs Day will officially launch, shining a much-needed spotlight on the lived experiences, immense value, and innovation of these founders.

The headline live event will take place locally at The Wroxeter in Shrewsbury (10:00am – 2:00pm), bringing together business owners, regional organisations, and national supporters to challenge outdated perceptions and foster true economic inclusion.

With Derwen Training College approaching its grand centenary next year, there is a beautiful, full-circle significance to this movement.
